boo boo

i still lose sleep over all the swell housewares i didn't buy from target in 2003, and the ones i carelessly donated to goodwill a year later. the only thing that might take away some of that ol' pain are these cynthia rowley band-aids. not to be a hypochondriac, but i just might die if i don't get my hands on them.

tofu, please

i've been vegetarian since i was 18. that would make 11 years for you mathematicians out there, except i had one weird year in there where i flirted with poultry. i like to pretend my three years of veganism make amends to those poor chickens and turkeys. at any rate, tofu is one of my absolute favorite foods, and one of the most excellent parts about traveling is hunting down the best veggie restaurants. people have teased me for occasionally photographing my meals, but i'm hungry right now so i'll share some with you!
new york city is a vegan's dream. everything i've ever had at teany is amazing. their vegan pumpkin cheesecake is no exception. you guys know how i feel about pumpkin...
everyone raves about red bamboo, and it's true that their tofu shrimp do taste uncomfortably like the real thing, but my choice for pan-asian in new york is zen palate. my handsome brother is pictured above snacking on some sweet potato fries that'll bring you to tears. my favorite dish there is a curried concoction of soy protein, potatoes, and carrots. yum.

i love all cupcakes, great and small. (vegan and not.) sticky fingers in washington, d.c. has some of the sweetest! everything's vegan there (including the chicken nuggets above which i probably ate after the cupcake)!

while in fort worth, texas last year, i made it a point to find spiral diner, a very famous and very cute organic vegan diner. i love veggie chicken salad sandwiches (though my boyfriend makes the best), and could not pass on dessert when that vegan chocolate chip cookie sundae was an option!

speaking of vegan ice cream, my sister and brother-in-law took us for a late-night cone at bi-rite creamery when we visited them in san francisco last year. too many choices!

not speaking the language, it was definitely a challenge to find veggie choices when we went to tokyo last summer! luckily, we toted around a little piece of paper that read "we are vegetarians. NO FISH." in japanese. i honestly can't remember what the above meal was, or where we ate it, but i know we were pleased to stumble upon a cute little veggie place in shibuya.

much, MUCH closer to home is a little shack in gainesville which cooks everything up in woks and serves the most delicious curry tofu stir-fry i've ever had. steamers has practically nowhere to sit, but it's worth standing while eating.

sometimes you just want some fast food. doesn't happen a lot for me, but if i'm ever in tampa (where the thrifting is fine!), you can bet i'll be ordering a veggie burger and some famous air fries from evo's.

and i'd be remiss not to mention ethos vegan kitchen in my old 'hood, downtown orlando. i don't think i've taken any photos of the food i've ordered, because i've been too busy worshiping their sheep's pie while i'm there. it's my very favorite vegan restaurant, and i'll be there at least twice while visiting orlando next month!

and... because every vegetarian loves a good slice of pizza now and then (or in my case- always), i'll give a shout-out to another orlando haunt, lazy moon. i might not have made it through college without the boxcar willy (a slice that big and a pint of pbr for $3.50).

if you've got a favorite veg restaurant- anywhere!- i want to know about it!

lenglen

i blame the lapse in blog entries on tennis elbow. actually, i did have my first two tennis lessons this past week! there've been many hours of live tennis championships on our television, and i've played my fair share of wii tennis, but i never actually attempted to hit a ball with a racket until tuesday afternoon. suffice it to say, i've got a very long way to go until i'm playing for fun, but i'm so excited to learn!

naturally i show up to the court in oversized college tees, shorts, and my beat up nikes, but i recently discovered several lovely photos of 20's tennis great suzanne lenglen, who is credited with revolutionizing womens tennis fashion. (she even took time to reapply her lipstick between sets!) i haven't yet been able to find
this book in the u.s., but i plan to get my hands on it asap.

pretty lady, no?

in season

autumn officially begins this week, and i'm so ready for it! the brisk fall months are my favorite time to play around with layers and warm colors, and i've got a few too many pairs of vintage oxfords that have waited patiently to be worn around town. the time is now! sadly, the beautiful weather and color-changing leaves are things that typically elude us floridians, so i've stocked up my vintage shop with lovely things that girls in prettier climates can wear. i see some weekend road trips in our future! the above photo is from visiting my brother in richmond last fall.

sweet pete's

my whole life, anytime i'd come to jacksonville to visit my grandparents, a trip to peterbrooke chocolatier was a requirement. their chocolate covered popcorn is genius! now that i live here too, i try to keep the peterbrooke visits reigned in a bit, but i was so excited to hear that the owners opened a new candy shop in springfield! especially because it doubles as an ice cream parlor and offers a big variety of vegan, gluten-free, and organic candies, ice creams, and even cotton candy (in over 30 flavors)!

this morning after hitting our saturday morning breakfast spot with some of our best friends, we went to check out sweet pete's and my three-year-old pal stedman gave me a tour. (he's a regular.) it's adorable inside and out!

oh no we didn't

i'm not the only one who was showered with cat-related gifts on my birthday this year. R's were more specific to our kitten though, and both commissioned by me. oops! his sister is a crazy-amazing artist with a flair for humor, so i knew asking her to paint a portrait of jude riding a manatee would be met with enthusiasm! he loves it, and i cannot wait to hang it in our dining room!

i designed some ridiculous kicks for R through keds collective, which was so fun. he promises he likes them, but they're a bit too big so they'll probably spend more time on display on our mantle than on his feet...

ol' man

my crazy boy is celebrating his 33rd tomorrow, so i figure a crazy cake is in order! this tie-dye cake is baking as we speak and it's smellin' good if i do say so myself! more birthday fun soon!

update: ta-da!

tess' dresses

my mama had some AMAZING clothing when she was a young lady. my sister and i love to look at old pictures of her and ogle her style, especially since most of what she wore she made herself. she even made her own wedding dress! unfortunately for us, she didn't haul much of her old apparel along with her while she moved to new states and into new decades. (not that much of it would have fit me anyway, since she's a good nine inches taller than me!)

so you can imagine my excitement when my boyfriend's mom phoned to say she had boxes of old clothes she thought i might like. we dashed over and i dove right into the boxes, squealing with delight and stuffing a trash bag full of my chosen treasures (at which point R's sister said i looked like a homeless person...). so many dresses, with original tags, in my size! i'm wearing one of my favorites to indian tonight with friends. hope R doesn't feel like he's on a date with his mother...

(jude wanted to do some modeling too...)

labor day sale

happy day off! we're enjoying this sunny, lazy monday- hope you are too! i woke up early to hit some 50% off sales at the thrifts (after eating a leftover birthday cupcake for breakfast, that is), and spent the rest of this morning adding some really great vintage pieces to the shop. you're the first to know!

it's only noon, so maybe i can convince R to take a break from strumming his guitar to ride bikes with me. now that the weather's cooling off, i can take my gal out on the open road without suffering heat exhaustion!
happy labor day, friends!

haring for ollie

if you know us, you know how much we love keith haring. we've got his work in various forms all over our apartment, and i tell everyone they need to see universe of keith haring. i was so excited to find these out-of-print board books for our little friend oliver's first birthday. his party is this weekend!

update- they were a hit!:
